Description

Engineered specifically for use with SPAX screws, the SPAX Hardwood Step Drills offer precise, clean pre-drilling in dense timbers and hardwoods. These stepped drill bits create the optimal pilot hole and countersink in one pass — reducing splitting, improving alignment, and enhancing overall fastening performance.

Models & Applications:

  • #4 – 4.0 / 6.5 mm Step Drill

Designed for general-purpose pre-drilling in hardwood, this bit creates a 4.0 mm pilot hole with a 6.5 mm countersink. Ideal for SPAX partial thread screws in decking, cladding, or furniture-grade hardwoods.

  • #5 – 5.2 / 6.5 mm Step Drill

Tailored for timber-to-steel connections, the 5.2 mm pilot allows SPAX screws to pass through dense timber and bite cleanly into steel substrates, while the 6.5 mm countersink ensures a flush finish on the timber side.

  • #6 – 6.0 / 9.5 mm Step Drill

Purpose-built for SPAX Boardwalk Screws, this larger format drill bit ensures perfect clearance and seating for heavy-duty outdoor fastening in thick hardwoods or composite decking. The 6.0 mm pilot ensures smooth screw entry, and the 9.5 mm countersink seats the head cleanly without tearing fibres.

Why Use SPAX Step Drills?
Reduces splitting in dense hardwoods
Creates accurate pilot + countersink in one motion
Increases holding power and alignment
Minimises surface tear-out
Perfect match for SPAX screw specifications

Whether you’re working on structural decks, fine timber joinery, or steel-timber hybrid projects, SPAX Step Drills are your go-to for reliable, repeatable results.
